About the breed
Siberian cat is known for its unusual, but quite classic appearance of a domestic Russian cat. Where did this breed come from, what are its features of appearance, character and health?
History of the breed origin
There are many rumors and myths around the origin of the Siberian breed of cats. According to some sources, Siberian cats appeared in the Siberian taiga, due to which they have some features of their appearance that helped them survive in difficult climatic conditions.
Siberian cat refers to an aboriginal long-haired breed and owes its features (appearance, character and endurance) to nature. It is believed that the ancestors of this cat were wild steppe (forest) Siberian cats - predators, which are excellent hunters.
Standards of the Siberian cat breed were determined not so long ago - in the early 90's. Breeders identified special features of how to determine the breed. They studied what a Siberian cat should be, and gave a detailed description: what it looks like, what are the characteristic features, what is the temper and what are the other features.
Description of Siberian cat breed
Siberian cat differs from its other relatives in a stocky build, muzzle, fluffy hair, character, physiology ... Let's look at the main characteristics of the Siberian breed of cats in more detail.
Breed Standards (appearance):
The first thing that makes the Siberian cat different from others is its size and weight. A powerful, stocky body with a rather developed musculature makes these cats magnificent. Muscular mass in Siberian kittens is formed long enough, as in humans, to 3 years.
The front paws are slightly shorter than the hind ones, which makes the spine slightly sloping (this gives strength and dexterity to the animal). The average weight of an adult Siberian female cat is 4-7 kilograms; a male cat is 5-10 kilograms.
The "Siberians" have large, muscular paws that make them different from other cats by the fact that there are long enough bundles of fur between their fingers.
The long hair of the Siberian kitten is hypoallergenic, which makes this cat an outstanding pet for allergic people. The hair of this breed’s cats consists of 2 layers: very thick undercoat and stiff hair, which practically does not get wet. Thanks to this "coat" cats feel comfortable in all weather conditions and temperatures.
The head of this breed’s cat is quite large, round in shape, and the neck is short, but strong. The muzzle has a trapezoidal shape. On the ears one can see the brushes, which they inherited from their ancestors.
The eyes are oval in shape; they are medium in size and slightly slanting.
The color of the Siberian cat can be quite different.
The origin of the cat makes itself felt. Siberian cat is an excellent hunter. The instinct of the hunter is so developed that the cat will be fine under any "extreme" conditions. It will dexterously catch not only the mouse but also the rabbit. The same instinct of a hunter makes a cat look like a dog. It brings things in its teeth (with joy). Fearlessness. "Siberians" protect their space, do not admit extraneous animals and people, telling the owners that "strangers" have come. They are absolutely not afraid of dogs, people, and things that scare ordinary cats (harsh noise, car hum, sirens ...).
Trainability. Siberian cat is smart and obedient. It can be taught to a certain place for a toilet.
Mind, discretion. The cat will never climb anywhere, not having made sure that it's safe. Before getting a toy from under the chair (wardrobe, bed), it will think carefully about how to do it.
Siberian cats are not picky. These cats will play with any object (toy, paper, thread ...), which they will be offered.
Passion for height. Do not be surprised to see a cat on the fridge, cupboard or high on the tree, as this is quite normal for them.
Restraint in relation to people. Siberian cats are affectionate, but restrained. They will not always ask to be held in hands, but they will never leave their master when he feels bad (sick, upset). They will not adjust to their owners, because they consider themselves as such. Siberian cat will be friends with the owner only if he respects it.
Health and immunity is much stronger than that of their brethren. Life expectancy averages 15-20 years.
Offspring. Siberian cats can give offspring an average of 4-6 kittens. The reproductive age of the female cat can last up to 16 years, the male cat - only up to 11.
Care and maintenance
The cats can take care of the fur on their own, so their owners only occasionally need to comb it out in the moult period (about 10 days) and constantly (1-2 times a month is enough).
If we talk about nutrition, then it is not difficult to feed these cats. The matter is that this breed has a genetically laid program for natural and diverse food, which facilitates the choice of feed and food for them. There is only one feature that is important to consider when feeding Siberian breeds - the amount of proteins (during growth). Considering the fact that the musculature of the kitten is formed by 3 years, its nutrition in these years should be predominantly protein (about 70%). Do not forget about their freedom-love and release them to freedom from time to time.
The Siberian soul is hidden in the powerful body of a Siberian cat. The benevolent and open being preserved many of the habits of its ancestors - love of hunting and natural observance. The intelligence of these cats is legendary - Siberians do not need to be tought stunts and miracles of dressing, they themselves, watching people, begin to understand what they want from them.
Siberian cat is a wonderful companion, able to maintain self-esteem. They have a very developed sense of home and for this quality Siberians are close to dogs. Fearlessness is also their trait. What scares an ordinary cat – will only amuse the Siberian. Siberian cats are silent so do not await any unnecessary sounds from them.
The Siberian cat, of course, embodies strength and dignity. Its soft melodic voice and graceful tread of a beautiful large body will bring an atmosphere of protection and tranquility to your home.
